Mississippi cop responds to shooting victim on road, finds own son

A Hazlehurst Police officer had been shocked to discover that her own son was the victim of a reported shooting early Sunday.

Local media reports identified the victim as 20-year-old Charles Stewart Jr. adding that he was shot to the head on Larkin Street. The devastated mom officer, later identified as Laquandia Cooley, confirmed the incident.

“We initially responded to the call, not knowing when I made it over there, the person was going to be my son that was laying there,” she said.

  • “As we get out, I look and I was like, ‘This is my son, this is my son.’ So, I literally just go into a breakdown, you know? Like, why? Who would do this to my son?”

    She added: “I couldn’t even believe what I was seeing. I was seeing my own son laying there on the ground dead. It was pretty much a panic. It was just. It was too much.”

    The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations will lead the investigation into Stewart’s murder.
