A New York City man was pronounced dead on the tracks of a Bronx subway early Saturday after trying to save his friend from a similar fate.
The decedent, 36, and his 38-year-old friend were waiting for a Manhattan-bound D train at around 2:45 a.m. at the Fordham Road Station in Fordham Heights when the friend ended up on tracks.
Visibly in panic, the courageous straphanger leaned over the platform to try and flag down the motorman, giving his friend the time to flee before getting hit.
Unfortunately, the younger man got wedged between the train and the platform. He sustained mortal injuries and died at the scene.
His friend was also hit but his wounds were minor and he is expected to survive. Investigators said that the first crash had slowed the train enough and he wasn’t badly struck.
The victims’ identities were not made public. An investigation is ongoing.
