‘Senseless’: Off-duty officer shot to death in Cleveland amid carjacking incident

An off-duty Cleveland Police officer was shot and killed Friday evening amid a carjacking ordeal to become the first Cleveland law enforcement member to be fatally shot since September 2020.

The incident occurred in Kamm’s neighborhood, police said. The fallen officer was shot twice and died at an area hospital.

The suspect was apprehended shortly later after authorities located the stolen car. Neither the victim nor the suspect was immediately identified.

  • “My heart is aching for the family, for our officers. Senseless. It just doesn’t make any sense,” Police Chief Wayne Drummond said.

    “We are devastated by this news and are asking for prayers,” added Cleveland Police Union President Jeff Follmer.

    Mayor-elect Justin Bibb also mourned the officer’s loss: “This evening is about the family of this slain officer that we lost today.”

    “I just ask the residents of Cleveland to keep the family in their prayers. Let’s all stay vigilant this evening. Stay safe and healthy. I also want to thank all members of law enforcement who supported us this evening.”
