A New York woman was pronounced dead after a perilous rescue operation from the Niagara River that involved a US Coast Guard crew Wednesday.
The unidentified victim was apparently swept to the edge of the 180-feet high Niagara Falls before drifting within 50 yards of the brink of the waterfalls.
After being first alerted to the submerged car at around 11:50 a.m., New York State Park Police officers were unable to reach the car and requested the help of a US Coast Guard helicopter crew.
A diver was then lowered by cable from the helicopter and successfully hoisted the victim from the car. She was declared dead at the scene.
The trunk of the submerged car was open, revealing the license plate numbers. Officials only revealed that the woman was a sexagenarian from the Western New York State area.
