A New York City detainee is in critical condition after trying to take his own life at a holding cell Thursday evening.
Anthony Scott attempted to hang himself in a holding cell at Manhattan Central Booking as he waited to be transferred to the Rikers Island Prison Complex.
Scott has been apprehended for assaulting a nurse at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia.
The detainee fell asleep immediately after arriving at the cell at 1 p.m. and woke up about two hours later.
At around 4:25 p.m., he wrapped a shoestring around his neck after locking the door of the cell. Four officers spotted him but couldn’t tend to him before 5 p.m. with the help of firefighters.
First responders were trying to revive Scott at 5:10 p.m. Minutes later, he was admitted to ICU at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Lower Manhattan.
