Second NYC inmate who died in Bronx jail this week had ‘medical emergency’: Officials

The Department of Correction said Wednesday that the inmate who passed away earlier on the day at a jail barge had suffered a “medical emergency.”

The decedent was identified as Stephen Khadu. He was detained at the Bain Center jail since 2019 for a second-degree murder charge.

Khadu seemed in medical distress and was rushed to a hospital but died shortly later at around 10:50 a.m.

    Correction Commissioner Vincent Schiraldi described being “devastated” to announce yet another death in custody in a matter of days but insisted that officials are “determined to stop this heartbreaking trend.”

    “We are doing all we can to remedy the unprecedented crisis we are experiencing in our jails. My thoughts and prayers are with the individual’s loved ones.”
