Indiana gunman killed by police after he fatally shot toddler amid domestic dispute

A 2-year-old Indiana toddler was fatally shot when a gunman fired at a woman inside an Elkhart residence Friday morning.

Police said that at around 10:30 a.m., a “verbal altercation” between the suspect and a woman at the house escalated to a shooting involving the toddler.

Elkhart Police Chief Kris Seymore told reports at a press conference that the gunman was intending to shoot the woman when he fatally struck the child.

  • He was tracked down to a nearby alley and as officers approached him, “an event, which details are unknown at this time, unfolded.”

    “During the event, an officer discharged his weapon striking the suspect and causing his death.”

    The officer who fatally shot the suspect was placed on paid administrative leave. A homicide investigation has since been launched.
