Macomb County news, Michigan news.

Michigan authorities have arrested a 37-year-old man after the grim discovery of his girlfriend’s remains on a tarp in their Clinton Township home’s basement.

Matthew Gerard Lewinski’s sister called police on July 28 to report the “very gruesome” scene of the victim’s remains.

Lewinski confessed to strangling Jerri Winters to death in December and mutilating her body that was since kept in the basement.

  • Neighbors told detectives that the foul odor emanating from the couple’s condo was just unbearable. They also said that they would often hear Lewinski and Winters argue.

“I’ve smelled it for a while,” one neighbor said. “I would run from my car to here [her home] like this [demonstrating holding her shirt over her face].”

“A guy said maybe he needs to clean up his house, but I said that is not cleaning house, that is something dead.”

Lewinski is being held without bond on first-degree murder, disinterment, and mutilation of a dead body as well as concealing the death of an individual.
