Alabama man, 28, dies within hours after being taken into custody

A Shelby County inmate died within the five first hours after being arrested Sunday, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Denzell Rhine was busted at around 1 p.m. on failure to appear charges and booked into the Shelby County jail.

The 28-year-old experienced a sudden health issue at around 6 p.m. He was taken to an area hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

  • Shelby County Sheriff John Samaniego said that an investigation has been launched into Rhine’s death by the county’s Major Crimes Task Force.

    Autopsy results are pending but authorities have since met with Rhine’s family and expressed their condolences.

    “Any loss of life, regardless of the circumstances, is tragic and felt throughout our community,” Samaniego said in a statement.
