Michigan authorities have convinced the son of a police officer to surrender without incident after he allegedly fatally shot his father to the head Monday.
Hayden Jagst, 18, was charged with open murder and weapon possession offenses following the death of his father Edward Jagst who worked as a Canton Township Police Officer.
Responding officers discovered Edward Jagst dead with a single gunshot wound to his head and lying in the bed.
The younger Jagst fled the scene but authorities convinced him to surrender through a phone call.
“Officer Jagst was a remarkable man who was strong in his faith, and was a truly loving husband and father,” Canton Police Services Director Chad Baugh said.
“He was a shining example of love and service and our Canton Police family, past and present, consider ourselves fortunate to have known him. Our hearts go out to the Jagst family at this time of tragedy.”
Edward Jagst was reportedly shot with a .22-caliber rifle found in his son’s car.
The 21-year veteran worked as an evidence technician, training instructor, criminal investigator, and honor guard member.
