A 24-year-old Kentucky medical student who went hiking Monday at Red River Gorge was found dead the following day at the bottom of a 150-foot cliff.
Gabriella Smith was pronounced dead at the scene after Powell County Search and Rescue teams spent hours looking for her.
They used the missing student’s phone signal to locate her in the Auxier Ridge area, but unfortunately, they “did not get the results that they wanted.”
Smith’s deadly fall was the second at the area within 24 hours. Police believe she got dangerously close to the rim before falling.
“You have trees that are coming down right now, limbs that are falling, the mud you slide on the trails and if you’re on the rocks, you’re going to slide, you’re going to slip and what I try to tell people is stay away from the edge,” PCSR Spokeswoman Lt. Lisa Johnson said.
