Infant dies after dad leads police in chase that ended with fatal shootout

An innocent infant had succumbed to injuries he sustained during a fierce shootout involving his father and police early Monday.

30-year-old Eric Derrell Smith fled a Baker, Louisiana home where he murdered his former girlfriend and her nephew but kidnapped his 3-month-old son before leaving the scene.

Police located Smith’s car when he crossed lines into Mississippi and a shootout with officers followed. Smith was eventually shot and killed along with the kidnapped baby.

  • “The juvenile did receive injuries and was taken to a local medical facility for treatment,” Biloxi Police said in a statement.

    “Despite the efforts of medical staff, the child passed away as a result of the injuries sustained. As stated the investigation is ongoing at this time. Once a thorough investigation is completed the details will be released to the District Attorney’s Office for review.”

    Smith’s victims were identified as 32-year-old Christin Parker and her nephew Brandon Parker.

    At least one police officer was placed on administrative leave following the child’s death.
