A toddler girl was declared dead last week after being attacked by one of her family’s mixed-breed dogs, police said.
It happened Friday at around 5 p.m. when Elayah Brown, 4, was transported to Cook Children’s Hospital where she succumbed to the animal’s bites.
“Anytime there is a loss of life, it’s a tragic incident,” Police Chief Neil Noakes told local news outlets.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and all first responders that responded to this call.”
The crime against children’s unit is currently investigating the incident. The family submitted the animal to Fort Worth Animal Care and Control after the incident.
“At that point, Fort Worth Animal Care and Control owns the dog. An evaluation was done of the dog based on behavior and history,” an official said.
“Based on the history of the dog causing a vicious attack, the best decision to make on behalf of the family, the dog, and the community was to humanely euthanize the dog.”
A GoFundMe page was created for Elayah’s funeral fees. It described her as a “bright, beautiful, and inspiring” child.
