Texas inmate dies after being struck by detention cop in self-defense

A Harris County prisoner was found unresponsive in his cell Wednesday, one day after being struck by a detention officer.

The unidentified inmate had been involved in a fight with a detention cop at around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The officer said that the inmate, in his early 20s, had attacked him and that he had to strike him to the ground in self-defense.

  • After an evaluation at the Harris County Jail clinic, the prisoner was brought back to the cell where he was found unresponsive the following day. He was pronounced dead at 1:30 p.m. at a local hospital.

    “Our sincere condolences go out to the person’s loved ones,” the sheriff’s office tweeted.

    “We respect the sanctity of every life and we will make sure this loss of life is fully investigated.”
