9 people dead, including 7 children when car caught fire following head-on crash in rural California

A tragic head-on crash involving vehicles on a Bakersfield area highway left all involved drivers and passengers dead, including seven children on New Year’s Day.

The fatal collision occurred at around 8 p.m. on Highway 33, 90 minutes north of Bakersfield when a 2013 Dodge lost control and veered off the road, according to Officer Rory Marks.

The 28-year-old driver then tried to overcorrect and get back to the lane when he inadvertently slammed into a Ford coming northbound.

  • The head-on collision ignited the Ford in flames; unfortunately, the car was carrying seven children and an adult. They all were pronounced dead at the scene along with the Dodge’s driver.

    “We don’t have any witnesses to it, other than the people who came upon it,” Officer Marks said. “We are looking for help if anybody knows anything.”

    Authorities are working to identify the victims.
