A “catastrophic” car crash has left five people dead Tuesday night almost instantly after a speeding vehicle crashed into another carrying four men and split it in half, authorities said.

The two-car crash took place on Riverdale Avenue near Culver Street at around 9:30 p.m. when a car traveling at “an extreme rate of speed” slammed into another coming on the opposite way, dividing it into halves.

The motorist behind the speeding vehicle’s wheel was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead while the four men traveling in the split car died at the scene.
