Hours following the shooting that targeted two police officers during protests Wednesday evening, Louisville authorities announced the arrest of a suspect.
26-year-old Larynzo Johnson was charged with wanton endangerment and assault of a police officer in the shooting of two officers who were not immediately identified but confirmed in stable condition.
Breonna Taylor’s demonstrators helped investigators track down Johnson who was spotted “intentionally using a handgun to fire multiple bullets at officers” before running away.
At least 100 more people were arrested over Thursday night unrest that came in response to a grand jury decision in Breonna Taylor’s death that sent protesters and looters out to Louisville streets.
The decision to charge only one of the three involved officers with criminal charges and not Taylor’s murder made many angry and disappointed after nearly seven months of a thorough investigation into her shooting death.
The state attorney general concluded that the armed raid that claimed the black woman’s life was justified since the three officers were attacked by Breonna’s boyfriend.
“I am very concerned about the safety of our officers,” Police Chief Robert Schroeder said amidst the violent unrest. “Recently, we’ve had two officers shot tonight and that is very serious, that is a very dangerous position. I think the safety of our officers and the community we serve is of the utmost importance.”
