The University of Georgia announced Wednesday that since the classes resumed last week, 798 students, 19 staff members, and four faculty officials have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Across the country, the surge of COVID-19 cases prompted several colleges to send students back homes over infection concerns. In Mississippi, North Carolina, and Virginia, students had to pack their suitcases and move out of campus after officials advised they should be quarantined for 14 days and turned to virtual classes.

Dr. Anthony Fauci called the step as “the worst” that could be done: “Keep them at the university in a place that’s sequestered enough from the other students, but don’t have them go home because they could be spreading it in their home state.”
