Joliet Police are investigating the death of a 17-month-old girl who was mauled by her family friend's pit bull while they partied on July 4th.
Marley Wilander died Sunday at a Joliet hospital after being attacked by two pit bull mixes that had escaped their enclosure. Authorities said that one of the two dogs inflicted fatal injuries on the toddler.
Someone ultimately heard noises upstairs and rushed to save the girl but she was already wounded at the time.
"Inside someone's house, it's their responsibility to take care of their dogs," said a neighbor who witnessed the party at the house and claimed dogs are frequently running free in the area.
No charges have been filed in the case.
