New York City news, New York news.

Three police officers have been hospitalized after sustaining severe injuries following an attack near Church and Flatbush avenues early Thursday.

The suspect who has not been identified walked “casually” up to his victim, an NYPD officer watching over protests, and stabbed him in the left side of the neck. The officer began bleeding profusely as the knifeman stole his gun.

Two fellow officers responded to the bloody scene only to be shot several times while confronting the suspect who had also been wounded. He remains in critical condition.

“Thank God we’re not planning a funeral,” Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said. “It appears to be a completely cowardly, despicable, senseless attack on a defenseless police officer.”
