Los Angeles records two deaths: A pregnant woman and a person in jail

Los Angeles County saw two firsts on Monday.

On Monday, Los Angeles County witnessed unexpected and overwhelming experiences. Health officials confirmed in a press conference that a pregnant woman and a person incarcerated in a prison lost their lives to the coronavirus.

Both are the first known coronavirus-related deaths of each kind in the county. The pregnant woman who died had serious health issues, according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Director. She added that the baby passed away as well.

Dr. Ferrer said that there are 228 pregnant women in the county that have tested positive for the COVID-19. 79% of them were symptomatic.

The director added that the person who died in jail was receiving care at a hospital before losing their life.

There are a total of 55,968 cases and 2,384 deaths in Los Angeles County, which has a population of approximately 10 million people.
