Massachusetts news, US news.

On Wednesday, Gov. Charlie Baker said that almost 8.6% of those tested for coronavirus over the past week were positive. He added that the number has declined after it was 20% or 30% in April.

According to the governor, about 4,900 COVID-19 tests were reported. The total of tests completed in the state is more than 545,000.

Up to now, about 2,100 individuals are hospitalized due to COVID-19, the number of hospitalizations has been trending downward over the past few weeks.

"These numbers show steady progress and we’re going to continue to carefully monitor them,” Baker said.

Globally, there are more than 5.2 million confirmed coronavirus cases, with more than 340,000 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker, and more than 2 million people have recovered.

The United States had crossed 1.6 million cases as of Saturday, with more than 96,000 deaths. At least 350,000 people have recovered.

Illinois has passed Massachusetts for the third-highest number of cases in the country, behind New York and New Jersey, the tracker shows.
