A missing Florida boy was found dead in a canal, the Opa-Loka mayor said Wednesday.
King Smith, 9, went missing on Tuesday. He was autistic and nonverbal.
“As a parent and as a mayor, I am heartbroken,” Mayor John H. Taylor Jr. posted on Facebook.
“No parents should ever endure the unimaginable pain of losing a child. On behalf of the City Commission and our entire community, I extend prayers of strength, healing, and peace to the grieving family during this time of profound sorrow.”
The mayor also thanked the Opa-Locka police department, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Dive Team, and the Homicide Unit for their efforts.
“As we mourn this loss together, let us come together in unity and compassion,” Taylor added.
“We ask the community to keep this family lifted in your thoughts and prayers.”
