Former Illinois House speaker Michael Madigan sentenced to 90 months in prison

Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has been sentenced to 90 months in prison in a hearing that saw the judge scolding him as he handed the sentence.

The longest-serving legislative leader in U.S. history was convicted in February of 23 counts of federal bribery, conspiracy, and wire fraud.

Madigan was tied to a plot aiming at pushing legislation in exchange for contracts and jobs for his associates.

  • “You took the law in your own hands, and it is an aggravating factor in regards to the sentence,” Judge John Robert Blakey said.

    Blakey sentenced the 83-year-old to 90 months in jail and a $2.5 million fine he will have to pay immediately in addition to three years of probation.

    Madigan will have to report to jail on Oct. 13.
