Charlotte County news, Florida news.

A Florida girl is fighting for life after she was repeatedly stabbed by her mother, who then left her for dead under some bushes, police in Charlotte County said.

Passersby found the wounded 12-year-old on Monday and called 911. The victim told detectives she was stabbed by her mother, Gwendolyn Girard.

“All the wounds appear to be knife-inflicted from all the reports that I’ve read. There were stab wounds. There were cut wounds. There were defensive wounds on the victim’s hands as well, where she tried to block some of the attack,” said Public Information Officer Chris Hall.

“In my 33-year career, there are only a handful of times that I have been left speechless. This is one of those times,” said Sheriff Bill Prummell.

The girl’s paternal grandmother said that she survived the attack by playing dead, calling her a “brave little girl.”

“She said she played dead. She said she fought her mother off as long as she could, and then she played dead, and then her mother left her there,” she said.
