One person is dead and three others hurt after a fire that broke out at a north Houston living facility late Wednesday, officials said.
Firefighters arrived just before 11 p.m. at the Independence Hall apartments on Burress Street, where they confronted heavy flames emanating from Building 13.
The building was completely ravaged by the two-alarm fire. One resident was pronounced dead at the scene while three others, including one who jumped from a window, sustained injuries.
“Our heart goes out to the person that did die, but these guys, the people, the firefighters that came here, they saved many because this could’ve been a whole lot worse than what we had,” HFD District Chief Russell Christ said.
Investigators said the fire started on the second floor, but the circumstances remain unclear.
“It’s just sad. I don’t know why this stuff happens. No one wants to be homeless, and it’s very unfortunate what happened. I just hope one day stuff gets better here,” a resident said.
