At least 10 people were injured in South Carolina late Saturday when a Memorial Day Weekend celebration ended in a stampede, officials said.
Police shut down the Atlantic Beach Bike Festival after a sudden stampede triggered by panicked concert-goers following an argument.
Authorities said the “mass casualty event” remains under active investigation, but a witness said that the argument started on the street, sending freaked revelers towards the stage at around 1 a.m. Sunday.
“They started panicking. It was a stampede,” he said.
The injured people were taken to an area hospital. Their condition was not immediately known.
Over 400,000 people were expected to attend this weekend’s annual Black Bike Week, which is traditionally celebrated during Memorial Day weekend.
