The first day of a North Carolina baby at a daycare ended with her death on Monday, police in Lenoir said.
1-year-old Maddy’s mother said she dropped off her baby for her first day at Creative Beginnings of Lenoir on Monday.
Hours later, she received a call informing her that Maddy never woke up from her nap.
First responders were called to the daycare at around 2:45 p.m. and found Maddy unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly later.
Police believe Maddy died of cardiac arrest but are still awaiting autopsy results to confirm the information.
Daycare worker Alexandra Coffey, 29, has been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with Maddy’s death.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has since suspended the daycare’s license “based on the agency’s findings that the public health, safety, or welfare requires emergency action.”
