A Texas teen was killed and another hurt after a shooting in the Cloverleaf neighborhood early Thursday, Harris County authorities said.
A group of men was playing a video game outside a home when another group walked up to them and started a fight over a stolen cell phone, police said.
Gunfire erupted shortly later, and the involved people fled the scene, including the victims.
Some ended up in the backyard of an off-duty officer who fired his weapon, believing the youngsters were trying to break into his home.
Deputies responded to reports of a drive-by shooting at around 4:30 a.m., Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.
The deceased victim was identified as 17-year-old Ashton La’Van, a North Shore High School junior.
“It’s hard. These kids need to put these guns down,” the victim’s cousin said.
