A 26-year-old woman was taken into custody after a 4-year-old girl showed up to school with a black eye, officials said.
Grace Murray was charged with three felony counts of abuse after investigators responded to the filthy home where she kept three children.
School officials contacted the Department of Health and Human Services after the girl came to school with bruising on her left cheek and a black eye and told workers her mother had “spanked her cheek” with an open hand slap.
Police went to the York Elementary School and questioned the girl’s 6-year-old brother about the incident.
The boy confirmed he and his two sisters would be spanked if they misbehaved and would be locked in their rooms overnight.
A search of Murray’s home unveiled deplorable living conditions, including trash bags strewn across the home, filthy walls, an unwalkable bathroom, and a strong odor of urine.
Murray and the third girl arrived in a car loaded with trash and rotten food.
Deputies said the girl’s hair was “filthy and full of dust and other debris.”
