Authorities in Florida said a speeding driver refused to hear his passengers’ pleas to slow down before he crashed, killing one of them in a gruesome scene.
James Case, 20, was allegedly driving his Audi S5 with three passengers at 156 mph, about 2 a.m. on Jan. 25.
One of the passengers pleaded with Case to slow down, to which he reportedly replied: ‘I am James. I know what I am doing.”
The victim of the crash had posted a final video from inside the car, featuring the dashboard and indicating that Case’s extreme speed was 156 mph in a 45 mph zone just before he crashed.
The Audi rear-ended a Honda Accord after he tried to change lanes “in an unsafe manner”; the Audi spun onto the shoulder, hit a curb, rolled over, and landed on its roof.
A passenger of the Audi was ejected from the vehicle, slammed into a gate, and landed on the ground. The Honda driver told police she saw “a body on the ground split in half.”
Six other people, including Case, were taken to a hospital for treatment. A survivor told detectives that Case “usually drives at a high rate of speed when they are in the car together.”
Case now faces six felonies and three misdemeanors, including vehicular homicide and reckless driving with injury counts.
