Authorities in Sverdlovsk, Russia, are suspecting a bear attack resulted in the gruesome death of a 44-year-old woman whose severed head was found mauled beyond recognition near where she was last seen.
Anastasia Bulgakova was last seen at around midnight on March 9, walking along a road in an area where bears and wolves roamed.
After she was reported missing, police and locals launched a search for the woman before making the grisly discovery of a severed head.
The head was scarred with “bite marks from a large animal,” suggesting she had been attacked and devoured by a massive bear.
Investigators also suggested the woman was murdered and then dumped in the woods where bears mauled her body.
“In the micro-district where the head was found, search operations are underway with the aim of possibly finding other remains,” Police said.
“Wild animals could have possibly dragged them away.”
