An armed man was gunned down by police after he brought a handgun into the emergency room of an Elizabeth City, North Carolina, hospital early Tuesday morning.
Elizabeth City Police officers and Pasquotank County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a handgun on hospital grounds just before 2 a.m.
The Sheriff’s Office said the suspect entered the emergency room of Sentara Albemarle Hospital and pointed the weapon at employees before hitting an unarmed security guard in the head with the gun.
Deputies found the suspect in the triage area of the emergency department. The man reportedly pointed the gun at the deputies, leading three deputies to fire at him.
The suspect succumbed to his injuries. The three deputies involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave with pay as the investigation proceeds.
