Kansas father charged with murder after toddler finds unsecured gun; fatally shoots younger sister

A Kansas father has been charged with murder after his 3-year-old daughter found a loaded, unsecured gun and shot her 1-year-old sister to death.

Michael Tejeda, 24, was reportedly watching the girls on Feb. 28 when he took the gun from his waistband and put it on a fireplace which he described as being about 4 feet high.

The father went to change his clothes when he heard a loud bang and his toddler ran to him crying and apologizing.

    “Tejeda said he found his firearm lying on the couch next to [the child].”

    The 1-year-old girl died less than two hours later.

    Tejeda, who was legally forbidden from having a gun, was also charged with felon in possession of a firearm and two counts of aggravated child endangerment.
