Authorities in Michigan recovered the body of a 90-year-old man who fell through ice while windsurfing on Lake Chemung in Livingston County Wednesday.
Witnesses reported the incident at around 2 p.m., sending emergency responders to the scene.
Rescuers with the Brighton Area Fire Authorities reached the man while he was still alive but couldn’t remove him from the water.
“The difficult part was getting him from where he was at back to shire,” said Fire Authority Chief Michael O’Brian.
Poor ice conditions prevented boaters from quickly reaching the victim. The U.S. Coast Guard used a rescue swimmer and helicopter to remove the man from the water.
The victim went into cardiac arrest and was declared dead at the scene. Officials asked residents to be vigilant and stay off icy lakes.
“Use caution if you are thinking about venturing onto bodies of water at this time of year. It you aren’t sure, stay off,” Michigan State Police said.
