A massive car crash involving a semi-truck and multiple vehicles claimed the lives of five people in Texas late Thursday.

The multi-car crash occurred shortly before 11:30 p.m. in Austin on the 12,900 block of North IH, 35 southbound, officials said.

Several victims were found pinned under vehicles and five victims were pronounced dead at the scene, including three adults, one child, and one infant.

“This incident was incredibly chaotic, and it was spread out over about a 10th of a mile,” said Captain Krista Stedman with the Austin Travis County EMS.

“We were able to get all the critical patients off the scene within about 40 minutes and, considering how complex the scene was, that’s pretty impressive.”

The cause of the crash is under investigation, according to Thayer Smith, the Assistant Chief of the Austin Fire Department.

“They’re going to do an investigation, which is why the highway may be closed for an extended period of time, because it is a very lengthy process.”
