The pilot of a small plane died in a crash in Mesquite, Texas, early Thursday after successfully avoiding to crash into homes and buildings, authorities said.
The Cessna CitationJet crashed just blocks away after taking off from the Mesquite Metro Airport at around 7:40 a.m.
Mesquite Fire Department Spokesperson Travis Block confirmed that the pilot died after crashing in a wooded area.
“We’re just thankful they didn’t hit any structures. It could have been a lot worse,” Block said.
The crash caused small fires that are under control and not spreading, Block added. There was no reported damage to homes and buildings in the area surrounding the site.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the NTSB will investigate the crash.
