Texas girl, 8, drowns in retention pond after fleeing from home

A Texas girl drowned in a retention pond after fleeing her aunt’s apartment late Monday, officials said.

The 8-year-old was found dead in a retention pond in Hycohen Road near the South Freeway just after 6 p.m. The girl was pronounced dead at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Police learned that the girl was with her aunt at the apartment when the woman became distracted and she wandered out of the home.

    Detectives believe the victim was autistic and her death is being investigated as an apparent accidental drowning.

    An investigation is ongoing and it is currently unclear whether charges will be filed.
