Inmate kills 3rd cellmate at same Sacramento County jail

A Sacramento County inmate is facing a new murder charge after he allegedly killed a third cellmate at the facility on Friday.

Tyler Yates was convicted of killing 33-year-old Nathan Marcus who was stabbed to death in 2022 at California State Prison, Sacramento.

Yates is also accused of killing 39-year-old Jonathan Rude last month after attacking him on the exercise yard.

  • On Friday, prison guards found Yates’ cellmate stabbed to death. Jake Kennedy was pronounced dead at 7:04 a.m.

    Investigators said Kennedy was accused of conspiring with Yates to kill Rude last month.

    Kennedy was sentenced to six years in prison for carrying a concealed dirk or dagger.

    Yates came to the San Diego County in 2017 to serve eight years in jail for first-degree burglary and assault likely to cause great bodily injury.
