The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after four inmates died at the county jail within a week.
Inmate Darian Nolen, 33, died Thursday evening after suffering a non-critical mental status change and was taken to a hospital.
A second inmate, 57-year-old Darin Crawford, was found unresponsive in his cell at 201 Poplar Friday morning.
That same day, 41-year-old Justin Sergerson was found dead in his cell from an apparent drug overdose.
A fourth inmate, 22-year-old Sherman Weakly, took his own life Saturday.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the deaths. During a Friday press conference, Sheriff Floyd Bonner cited a lack of human resources and the officer shortage at the jail.
“We are in a crisis situation at the jail. We’re close to 300 officers down,” said Chief Deputy Jailer Kirk Fields.
