Elderly Alabama woman mauled to death by neighbor’s dogs

A Lee County, Alabama woman died from her injuries Tuesday, a day after she was mauled by her neighbor’s dogs.

78-year-old Patricia Burt died early Tuesday at Piedmont Midtown Medical Center in Columbus.

The fatal incident unfolded Monday on Lee Road 356 in the Beulah Community where Burt was attacked and injured by two dogs.

Investigators said Burt was visiting the neighbor when their two Cane Corso dogs broke free from their containment kennel and attacked her.

  • Burt’s husband and the dogs’ owner tried to intervene to stop the attack. The husband ultimately shot and killed the dogs.

    “It was just a horrific incident,” said Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones.

    “It doesn’t appear there was any criminal intent here obviously.”

    Jones added that deputies had previously responded to the home regarding the same dogs.

    “We’re trying to determine the circumstances of those responses.”
