A Texas rancher is dead after he unintentionally drove over an improvised explosive device planted by a drug cartel, police said.
The tragic incident claimed the life of 74-year-old Antonio Cespedea Saldierna who ranched on both sides of the border.
The Texas Agriculture Commission said a second victim, identified as Horacio Lopez Pena, also died in the explosion. Lopez’s wife was injured.
Saldierna was reportedly driving in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas when tragedy struck.
The agency urged ranchers traveling or working near the border to “stay vigilant” and “aware of their surroundings.”
“This shocking act of violence highlights the growing threat posed by cartel activity along our southern border,” said Commissioner Sid Miller.
