An Oregon man was taken into custody on Thursday in connection to the murder of an 80-year-old woman.
Multnomah County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Sauvie Island on Monday after a suitcase containing a human body was found on the banks of the Willamette River.
The county medical examiner identified the victim as Judy Hurley. Her death was ruled a homicide.
54-year-old Michael Darwin Moody was arrested on charges of second-degree murder and abuse of a corpse.
He was taken into custody at an apartment in the St. Johns area.
Friends of Hurley said that she was “bedridden” and that strangers were living in her home “without her permission and stealing from her.”
“Judy was in a pretty bad spot. People would come to the house and essentially use it as a base of operations to commit crimes. She didn’t even know who was living there,” the friends said.
Hurley later moved out of the home to a retirement facility. However, she moved back to her home for “medical reasons” and the friend lost contact with her.
