Authorities in Wyoming gained access to a highway tunnel hours after a fiery, multi-vehicle crash that killed at least two people and caused structural and health concerns hindering the investigation.
Preliminary reports indicated that the crash occurred Friday in the westbound tunnel of Interstate 80 under Castle Rock killing at least two people and injuring five others.
“It’s really going to be a long process just because of the magnitude of the incident and then being able to document everything that we need to make sure that our investigation is thorough,” said Wyoming Highway Patrol Ma. James Thomas.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation said the tunnel sustained extensive fire damage causing concrete to fall and preventing first responders from reaching the scene.
The crash is under active investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and the highway patrol.
