Palm Beach County news, Florida news.

The suspected killer of a Florida corrections officer was taken into custody Thursday with his victim’s handcuffs.

Kevin Bennette, 32, stands accused of killing Palm Beach County Corrections Officer Basil Powell, 39, on Feb. 10.

Investigators believed Bennette “targeted and ambushed” the officer after learning of his relationship with his former girlfriend.

“I think that he was extremely agitated over that and upset,” Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said.

Powell’s 5-year-old daughter was in the car waiting for him when he was shot. The father had just picked her up from daycare.

“He had just left here, and it’s like every time he comes in, he greets us,” a daycare teacher said of the victim.

“He asks us how her day has been. He just wanted to know what’s going on with his little girl every single day.”
