A 12-year-old Georgia boy is dead after a tragic accident during a motocross race, authorities said.
Deputies with the Crawford County Sherriff's Office responded to reports of an injured person at the Echeconnee EX motocross track around 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
The victim was identified as 12-year-old Dalton Hill. He died after being transported to Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center.
The boy was reportedly injured while taking part in a race on the dirt bike track, authorities said.
“We are deeply heartbroken by the passing of a member of our motocross family,” the team said in a statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with Dalton’s family and friends.”
Hill was a student at Georgia Military College Prep School. In a Wednesday statement, the school mourned his sudden death.
“Dalton was a bright and talented young man who made a lasting impact on our school community,” the statement read.
“He was a dedicated student, earning honor roll distinctions throughout his time at GMC Prep, and an exceptional athlete, competing in baseball, cross country, and wrestling,”
“He was a friend to so many, and he embodied GMC’s motto of ‘Character Above All.’”
