Four children and a woman were killed late Saturday in a multi-car crash in Miami Gardens, authorities said.
First responders with the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue rushed to the area of NW 170th Street 37th Avenue over reports of a “mass casualty incident” just before 6 p.m.
Authorities said the collision involved a white Nissan Altima, a silver Cadillac Escalade, and a black Kia Sorento.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the Kia struck the Nissan, forcing it into the Escalade and then into a fence.
Three people were trapped inside one of the vehicles and nine were rushed to hospitals.
Five people died in the crash, including four children. They were occupants of the Nissan. The hospitalized victims’ conditions remain unclear.
The Kia driver, 25-year-old Antonio Wilcox, remained at the scene. He was arrested after falling as he left his car.
Miami Gardens Police Executive Officer Emmanuel Jeanty described the crash as a “very, very tough time” for everyone. He confirmed that speed and alcohol were involved in the tragedy.
“It’s a very tough night for our community. It’s a very tough night for our officers responding to the scene.”
