A gun discharged inside a second grader’s backpack at a Huntsville elementary school Thursday afternoon, officials said.
Students were in the hall of Challenger Elementary School getting ready to leave at around 2:45 p.m. when the shooting happened.
Huntsville City School officials said the firearm accidentally went off inside a child’s backpack.
The bullet struck another student’s backpack damaging a laptop. That student suffered ringing in their ears but no further injuries were reported.
Officials said the student who brought the firearm will face disciplinary consequences.
“Our team will continue working closely with law enforcement to understand the specifics of this incident,” school officials said.
“We ask for your ongoing support to ensure all weapons at home are properly secured,”
“Additionally, please speak with your student about the importance of ‘see something, say something’ to make us aware of any concerns.”
