Alaska news, US news.

Authorities in Alaska are searching for a missing plane that vanished with 10 occupants Thursday afternoon.

The Bering Air Caravan left the Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m. heading to Nome with nine passengers and a pilot on board.

The pilot reportedly told Air Traffic Control “he intended to enter a holding pattern while waiting for the runway to be cleared.”

At 4 p.m., Alaska State Troopers received reports that the plane was overdue. The aircraft last reported information at 3:16 p.m. and its last known location was 12 miles offshore, according to data from FlightRadar.

The Nome Volunteer Fire Department said ground crews were combing a stretch of the coast from Nome to Topkok and “continue to expand search efforts to as many avenues as possible until the plane is located.”

However, air search operations were limited “due to weather and visibility.”

The department added that the National Guard was involved in the search. The National Transportation Safety Board is observing the situation.
