Intellectually disabled boy, 8, mauled to death by neighbor’s dog

An 8-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries days after he was attacked by a neighbor’s dog, Hawaii officials said.

The attack occurred at around 11 a.m. last Tuesday in Wahiawa and was caught on surveillance footage.

The child, who had intellectual disabilities, was alone in the neighbor’s yard when a large dog on a chain attacked him.

First responders found the boy unresponsive with no pulse. He succumbed to severe head and neck injuries a few days later.

“I’m horrified, horrified that this happened,” said University of Hawaii disability studies’ Professor Meriah Nichols.

“Many kids with intellectual disabilities, in particular Down syndrome and autism, will elope, and that’s where they just have an impulse to go somewhere and they go.”
